MyGANTT - origins of the software

Why did I develop project management software?

or when a side project proves useful to many

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Who didn’t have a hero when they were young? Yes, an older friend, a karate teacher, a rock singer, a comic book character… in short, someone to look up to and be inspired by.

Mine? Leonardo da Vinci

I admired his wide range of interests and talent. He was a scientist, philosopher, architect, painter, sculptor, draftsman, treatise writer, set designer, mathematician, anatomist, botanist, musician, geologist, engineer, and designer..

Leonardo Da Vinci as Project Manager

Why was MyGANTT created?

Some might ask, “What does all this have to do with the article?

I have always thought Leonardo was a genius. I think this is because he was so talented in so many fields. I also think it is because he had to keep all the processes and stages of his inventions in his head. He didn’t have any project management software!

I’m no genius like Da Vinci. I’m a product manager and ever since I started working on my digital products, I’ve always needed a tool to help me do and manage various tasks.

So I started looking for a project management tool right away, many years ago. But I never found anything simple that suited my needs.

I didn’t have many expectations, on the other hand:

  • don’t spend too much time entering data
  • work in a simple way
  • manage everything as flexibly as possible
  • get all possible information at the end of the process

The tools I found were either too complicated to use or took too long to set up. Many of them had a lot of features that I didn’t need, and they were designed for large teams. Few were designed for small teams and none for individuals.

Since I’m a programmer, I decided to build one that suits my needs.

The MyGANTT story

Since then, I’ve never stopped working on this side project, and it’s actually gotten better over time because it’s grown along with the changing needs of my work.

Today, I mainly deal with software products for financial markets, but all my work is supported by MyGANTT. That’s why I decided to make it public, thinking that it could also be useful to other professionals in their work, whatever that may be. MyGANTT is suitable for project managers but is perfect for those who aren’t but still need to manage projects. If you work alone or in a small team, my software could be useful to you.

It hasn’t been an easy journey.

At first, I was a bit hesitant. It was a side project that I only worked on when I had time. It wasn’t intended for the public, so it was missing a lot of things. Most importantly, it hadn’t been tested by a beta tester. I fixed my own bugs, but it’s common knowledge that software developers can’t see all the bugs they create.

The biggest problem was something else, though. It was made with my head and for my needs, so it didn’t follow the usual project management guidelines. I created it based on my own approach to projects and my professional needs.

Once I got over my initial fear, I took the plunge. I decided to publish it. First on my website and then in other specific repositories.

What happened next surprised me because I didn’t expect it. I thought I would only receive criticism, but instead I received messages from people thanking me for creating it and making it free. They said that they found it very useful for their work. They encouraged me to develop it further and suggested features to add.

Let me be clear: I have also received a lot of negative feedback. I’ve heard things like, “This is missing,” “That is missing,” “This doesn’t work,” and “That is ugly.” Thanks to this feedback, however, I have made many changes. Criticism is always useful for improvement.

All of this motivated me to work on it whenever I could and make improvements. More often than not, this happened at night 😊.

This is the story of my software. Why am I telling you this?

Because many of you are asking me. And because I understand the curiosity of those who know me as an expert in fintech software and author of books on finance and trading.

So, to all those who still ask me why I created a project management program, I can now answer.

I created MyGANTT to support the management of my products and projects, and we have grown together over the years.

It might be useful to you, too. Try it, it’s free!
